School refusal: how to get students back to school

LISTEN TO THE PODCAST:

School Refusal: A Parent's Perspective

The number of students refusing to attend school is growing, and it’s impacting student success and graduation rates. This is more than acting out: it’s a sign of mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. In this episode, Chris Leonard talks with Laura, whose daughter Kelly struggled with school avoidance, about the causes, warning signs, and what finally worked to get her daughter back to school.

From the podcast:

“In 10th grade they changed her school program where they alternate the schedules, so each day it's a different day, and that threw her completely off… The school really wasn't telling me what to do. I was on my own… I actually wound up calling around and searching on the internet. Where do you put kids with these kinds of problems?”
